Affordable GAP rental housing – Public Sector Partnership Program

Public sector employers – like the Regional Municipality, Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, local school districts, and the RCMP – have historically struggled to attract entry-level employees due to the high cost of housing in Fort McMurray. In 2005, WBHDC entered into partnership with these five employers to provide affordable GAP housing alternatives that have greatly enhanced recruitment and retention, strengthening policing, municipal services, education and health care for all who call Wood Buffalo home.  The Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No. 2 joined the partnership in 2009.

Superintendents George McGuigan and Doug Nicholls, of the Catholic and Public school divisions respectively, strongly support the program.  Superintendent McGuigan notes the affordable GAP housing partnership has been essential to recruit young teachers and keep them here.  Superintendent Nicholls concurs: “Retention is stronger and terms are longer.”  Similar benefits have been noted by other public sector employers.

This affordable housing program gives new and existing public sector employees – municipal employees, health professionals, teachers, and police officers – stable and secure housing in our Prospect View complex.  Tenants may stay as long as they meet income qualifications, or they may participate in the program long enough to adjust to Fort McMurray’s unique real estate market prior to moving into market housing.
